Brno

The second largest city in the Czech Republic... Centuries marked by the desire to equal Vienna as the capital city of the Danube monarchy and also as the closest cultural centre have not made Brno into a metropolis but definitely into a city worth visiting. Would you like to see architectural works which the authors of Wiener Staatsoper, the famous Karlskirche or Votivkirche did, when they were not working on their Viennese contracts? Would you like to see the renowned Spielberg castle, which made the monarchy notorious around the whole of Europe? Or the Augustinian convent of Gregor Mendel, which made Brno famous in the good sense? Would you like to follow the steps of young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or those of Leoš Janáček in his best age? See the well-known Villa Tugendhat or the architectonic works of Adolf Loos and the Brno Modern Age? Learn something about the studies of Karel Čapek, Robert Musil or Kurt Gödel in Brno? All of these are reasons for a short break on the confluence of Svratka and Svitava rivers...

The current centre of the South Moravian region is no longer typical for its Czech-German ties as was the case in the times when there were fewer Czechs than in Vienna, who were nonetheless asking for a foundation of a Czech university; however, it is the centre of a variety of international activities thanks to its convenient location among Vienna, Bratislava and Prague. The very Czech university, which Brno had desired for for so long, and the founding document of which was eventually signed by the first Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in 1919, is going to become the host of the ULD conference. Together with the Masaryk University, Brno is now the seat of 5 state and 5 private universities and colleges which means an extraordinary concentration of educational institutions and an oustanding experience in the field.
